David began working at A J Park in 1969 and became a partner in 1977. David specialises in all aspects of intellectual property law for patents and designs. He is also a specialist in copyright for industrial design.
David has extensive experience with a range of industries including packaging, food, mechanical, construction and fertiliser. He has also worked with agricultural chemicals, animal remedies, drilling, timber treatment, and plastics technologies.
David protects the intellectual property interests of leading New Zealand innovators. A major part of his role involves pre-grant opposition work.
David is the co-leader of the mechanical and manufacturing and life sciences teams in our Auckland office. As part of David's role he:
- conducts patentability searches;
- drafts and prosecutes patent applications;
- files patents in New Zealand and overseas;
- conducts infringement opinion work;
- advises on patent filing strategy;
- provides litigation support for patent oppositions, revocations and enforcement;
- conducts intellectual property audits;
- advises on licensing of intellectual property and research agreements;
- files and prosecutes design applications;
- drafts intellectual property policies;
- advises on copyright in industrial design.
David is a member of the Auckland District Law Society, the International Association for the Protection of Intellectual Property (AIPPI, New Zealand group) and he is a fellow of the New Zealand Institute of Patent Attorneys (NZIPA). He is also a member of FICPI (New Zealand Group) and the Licensing Executives Society of Australia and New Zealand.
David has been both premier coach and president of the Auckland University Rugby Football Club. In 2007 David was made a Life Member of the Auckland University Rugby Club and a Paul Harris Fellow of his Rotary Club.
